All of our NHS and Care Home fire escape signs have been designed to the Hospital Technical Memorandum 65, Signs Guide 2. Based on the designs of BS 5499 but with the addition of a flame symbol to enhance the meaning of the signs. Tests have shown the inclusion of the flame symbol significantly assists in the recognition and understanding of the meaning of the escape symbol in an emergency.
This NHS Fire Exit sign with an arrow pointing up to the left indicates the safe escape route to take in the event of a fire or any emergency.

Ensuring that patients, visitors and staff can quickly and easily find their way around a hospital or care facility is an important factor. Using the correct signage for evacuation routes during a fire or any other emergency is vital to help ensure that your care facility complies with the relevant health and safety standards. To avoid any confusion to staff or patients, the safest emergency escape route must be clearly defined to help prevent serious injury and negligence claims. The health and safety signs used in the healthcare industry differ slightly from those used in other industries.
It is a legal requirement for escape routes to be clearly marked on your premises for the event of a fire or any emergency. Fire Exit and Exit signs should be, so far as reasonably practicable, evenly spread and consistently located at the same height so that the evacuee can quickly and effectively predict the location of the next sign within the escape route. Signs should not be fixed to doors or sited where they may be obscured by open doors. Signs sited on walls should be mounted between 1.7m and 2.0m from floor level measured from the base of the sign.
